Changing Your Name After Divorce

Once the divorce is official, if you included a name change in your documentation, then your name is legally changed.  Now you need to implement the change.

  1. Obtain Certified Copies of the Decree or Certificate of Dissolution
  2. Update Government Identifications
    1. Driver’s License and Car Title
    2. Passport
    3. Social Security Card
  3. Notify Your Employer: to update your payroll, tax forms, health insurance, retirement accounts, and pension plans
  4. Update Voter Registration
  5. Update Bank Accounts and Credit Cards
  6. Notify Other Businesses: including utilities, insurance companies, club memberships, frequent flier programs, and other businesses
  7. Protect Your Privacy: Change usernames and passwords
